About Better Rate Mate
Who we are and how the service works commercially.
Is Better Rate Mate really free?
Yes. Comparing and reading our guides costs you nothing, and there is no obligation to switch at the end of it. We are paid by the provider when someone chooses to move across.
Are you owned by a lender or an energy retailer?
No. We are independent of the providers we compare. Where a provider pays us a commission, that fee does not change the price you are offered and does not decide the order of your results.
Which providers do you compare?
We compare a panel rather than the entire market. That means a product may exist somewhere we do not cover. We would rather tell you that plainly than imply we have seen everything. Our lender profiles set out who we cover for home loans.
How do you make money?
Commission or a referral fee from the provider when a product is taken up through us. Our how we're paid section explains it in full, including why it does not change what you pay.
Comparing and switching
What actually happens when you run a comparison.
How much can I save?
It depends entirely on what you are on now, where you live and how much you use. Anyone quoting you a single figure before seeing your details is guessing. Run a comparison and you will get numbers for your situation rather than an average.
Will my power or internet be cut off when I switch?
Generally no. The physical connection to your property does not change, only who bills you for it. For energy there is no interruption and no technician visit. On most nbn technologies the new provider takes over the existing line, usually the same day.
How long does a switch take?
Comparing takes about two minutes. The switch itself depends on the provider and the product: energy and broadband are typically days, while a loan is a full application and takes considerably longer.
Do I need a copy of my bill?
It helps but it is not essential. A recent bill lets us compare against your actual usage rather than a household-size estimate, which sharpens the numbers. Without one you will still get a useful comparison.
Am I obliged to switch?
No. Nothing happens until you tell us to proceed. You can stop at any point before a switch is submitted.
Energy, broadband, solar and loans
Questions specific to each thing we compare.
Do you compare gas as well as electricity?
Yes. You can compare electricity on its own, gas on its own, or both together, which is often where the better deal sits if one retailer can supply you with each.
Why does broadband availability depend on my address?
The nbn uses different technologies street by street: fibre to the premises, fibre to the node, HFC and fixed wireless. What speeds are realistic at your place depends on which one you are on, so we check your address rather than your suburb.
Can you tell me whether solar is worth it?
That is the point of the solar comparison. We size a system against your actual usage, apply the rebates you qualify for, and show the payback period before you commit. For some roofs the answer is that it does not stack up, and we would rather say so.
Does comparing loan rates affect my credit score?
No. Comparing is not a credit application and creates no enquiry on your file. Only a formal application with a lender does that, and that only happens if you decide to proceed.
Your details and privacy
What we do with the information you give us.
What do you do with my information?
We use it to build your comparison and to pass your enquiry to the relevant providers or brokers so they can quote. We do not sell your personal information. Our Privacy Policy sets out exactly what is collected and who receives it.
Will I be bombarded with calls?
No. A consultant may call to walk you through your shortlist, and the providers you are matched with may contact you about their quote. You can ask us to stop contacting you at any time and we will.
Can I get a copy of my information, or have it deleted?
Yes. You can ask us for a copy of what we hold, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Contact us and we will action it, and if you are unhappy with how we handle it you can escalate to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
