Cover for the people who depend on you

Work out what your family would actually need.

Cover sized against the mortgage, the years of schooling left and the income your household actually runs on.

Keep the roof over their heads.

The most common reason people take cover: enough to clear the mortgage so nobody has to sell in a bad year.

Policies drift out of date.

Cover taken out a decade ago rarely matches today's mortgage or family. A review costs nothing and often finds you are over or under insured.

Questions people ask

Stepped or level premiums, which is better?

Stepped starts cheaper and rises each year with your age. Level costs more up front and rises far more slowly. If you expect to hold the cover for a long time, level often wins overall, but it depends how long you keep it.

Do I need a medical?

Not always. Many policies underwrite on questions alone up to a certain cover amount and age. Larger amounts, or a health history, may mean a medical or a report from your GP.

Is life cover through super enough?

It is a reasonable start and premiums come from your super balance rather than your bank account, but default cover is often well below what a household with a mortgage would need. It is worth checking the amount rather than assuming.
